Finding Bedding for Your King Size Bed

For many people, there is nothing like the comfort of a king size bed at the end of a long day. Some couples find having a large bed very relaxing, since you can have a nice bit of real estate to yourself when you need it for sleeping or lazing about. And if your family pet and/or children like to jump in from time to time, the extra space you get from the king size mattress may make a big difference.

Finding a wide choice of bedding options for a king size bed used to be pretty difficult. Until pretty recently, there was not a big market for king size bedding. The average bedroom was not built to accommodate such a large bed and a king size bed was considered an extravagance. Thankfully, larger beds have become a lot more popular and as a result, king size bedding is a lot easier to find.

King size sheets, comforters, blankets and duvet covers can all be found in department stores and online in a variety of fabrics and designs. Keep in mind that there are different types of king size beds when you are looking for bedding. Make sure you know if you have a “standard” or eastern king” that measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long or a “California” or “western” king that measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long.

As far as measurements go, you should also be aware of the thickness of your mattress. The standard thickness is about 7 – 9 inches. If your mattress is extra thick or you are using a pillow-top, you will have to look for bedding made for a super king size mattress.

You will probably find a king size duvet cover, sheet set or blanket will cost a bit more than smaller size bedding. Look for sales that advertise the same cost for any size bedding item. Home stores will often run these sales on their comforters or bed-in-a-bag product lines. This works to your advantage when you are shopping for king size items.
