Mistake #1: Obsessing About Thread Count

Usually the thread count is inflated by counting a multiple ply yarn as more than one. Keep it simple and purchase the highest thread count sheet that is not ‘inflated’ in this way.

Mistake #2: Going Cheap

Going to the cheapest discount store and then looking in the bargain bin is not exactly the best way to find luxury bedding, you really get what you pay for in most cases.  As with other products, high quality percale is typically going to cost you a bit more.  For example the well reviewed products sold online by Thomas Lee typically cost about $200 USD per set.  A similar set sold by The Company Store sell online for about $100 USD. Of course, you can also find these cotton percale sheets at several online or brick and mortar locations with a price range anywhere in between.  Just remember, with these products, you generally get what you pay for.  While you obviously shouldn’t just shop for the highest price, it can sometimes be a better indication of quality.

These are two of the most often made mistakes that people make when looking for new sheets, percale or otherwise.  You might also find that flannel sheets are advertised in a similar way. As long as you do not make the same mistakes you should be able to find the percale sheets that will comfort you to sleep each night.

Bi-fold models have hinges on the inside and generally use a small knob in order to be opened. There will be a sliding track on the top portion of the door to allow the door to open and fold at the same time. If you need bedroom closet doors to fit into a small space, these can be nice. You can access the full length of the closet when they are fully folded.

Sliding doors have tracks and one door will run behind the other. You can access one side of the closet at a time. These models do not allow as much accessibility, but they generally cost less and are a very popular style.  These are similar to what you might find on some styles of sliding wardrobe doors.

Pocket doors look similar to sliding models but instead of sliding one door behind the other, you slide a pocket model into the wall. You can also use tiebacks around the frame so you can pull the curtains back when you want to look inside the closet.

There are also big name designers in the home and fashion world who design closet doors for bedrooms.  These will cost you much more than a pre-hung style or kit from your local home improvement warehouse, but what you’re paying for is the design element.  Leather upholstered and fabric wrapped doors are among some of these more modern and contemporary looks.

Depending on the ultimate look you are trying to achieve, you may also be able to create a chic or modern look and feel with a colored leather.  You’re familiar with the browns and black colors of leather.  These are the more common choices and will create a warmer or more masculine appearance in many cases.  Again, the other accessories in your bedroom, like the furniture pieces, bedding and choice of color on the walls will also have a role in determining the overall tone of your bedroom space.

A more feminine look can be created using a white leather with some crystals or other adornments.  A light colored bedroom with a chandelier can give you an elegant feel.  The canopy bed is also a great choice and comes with various headboard designs.  Many of these are metal or metal and leather or fabric combinations to soften the feel of the metal or iron bed frame in the room.  These upholstered headboards can be custom designed to fit your space and tastes or you can find them in the standard bed sizes.

Modern Zen Bedroom

Standard canopies are the most common type found on the market today. These beds come with a complete canopy bed frame and a flat or arched ‘roof’ made of fabric. But, for your little princess, nothing but a princess canopy bed will do.  This doesn’t have to be the brand name version, it can simply be a scarf or fabric draped over the posts.  Then, you can add a crown or some jewels if you wish to give her that special space of her own.  Oh, and it’s got to be pink, of course.

Clothing, sleepwear and flannel sheets, queen being the most popular size in this century, are the most common uses of this fabric. Softness is attained when the flannel is spun or woven in a loose form when it is not napped, but it is often napped with cotton today, on one or both sides. As with similarly fine percale sheets, the thread count on these sheets will determine its quality and durability. The higher the thread count, the higher the quality, and flannel sheets blended with cotton ensures the greatest softness and warmth – a true luxury bedding experience.

Most manufacturers of sheets give a thread count, but if they do not there are two ways to check the count. Some manufacturers give a measurement of flannel in ounces per square yard. If you desire high quality flannel sheets, look for a measurement in the excess of four ounces (metric being 113 grams) per square foot (metric being 0.9 square meters).  These numbers don’t reference the depth, for something like deep pocket sheets that you may need for the more modern thicker mattresses.

It is unlikely that no measurement is given at all, but if you do find the sheets without a measurement on the package, the second way to test the quality is to hold the sheet up to the light. If very little light filters through the fabric, the sheet consists of a higher thread count.

As surely as new flannel sheets keep one warm, it is interesting that thin, worn flannel makes a superb sheet in the summer for coolness, as well as absorbing excess moisture. This is one reason why you hear people say they have had their flannel sheets for years and are still satisfied with them. Warmth, comfort and easy care are indeed some of the benefits of these sheets, but think about this. If the electricity goes off, which is rather common in the winter where the climates are more severe, you will be grateful for a warm blanket and a set of these sheets. Purchasing flannel sheets is a wise decision.
