Floor Tiles: Creating A Great Tiled Bathroom

Bathroom tile installation is a project that most homeowners can tackle themselves. Bathroom tiles look good, and are easy to keep clean. Tile cleaner or grout cleaner can be used with a sealant to help keep them free of mildew and mold buildup.  They can handle the moisture in a bathroom without discoloring or becoming worn like wallpaper or paint may – with or without a bathroom fan. To cut the tiles, you would need to either rent an electric tile cutter or buy a smaller, manual hand-held one. The following is one way to create your shower design using tile.

1.  Find the center point of your floor or wall, mark the center line, and begin tiling at the line and work your way out. This way if you must cut and piece, it’s not in the middle of the room.

2.  Put down adhesive, and press the tile into place. Use a spacer between each tile.

3.  Once the tiles are set, remove the spacers and mix your grout. Using a float, spread the grout into the areas between the tiles, and use a sponge to wipe up excess grout. Grout is very drying and irritating to the skin, so wear gloves when working with it.

4.  When the tiles are finished, you will have to wait at least a day or two before allowing any floor traffic.  If this is your only bathroom with a shower or tub, you might want to plan on it being a weekend project so you don’t have a conflict with showering for work.

5.  Clean tiles well to remove any traces of dust still on them. If the grout discolors, just clean with some cleaner made for that problem.

6.  Finally, apply your grout and tile sealer to ensure that you don’t run into problems with dirt and mildew staining and ruining your tiles.  Bathroom tiles are durable and hold up well, and your newly tiled bathroom will look great for many years to come.
