Bedding sets come in a variety of thread counts, a term which refers to the number of threads per square inch of fabric. From a low of 200 thread count to as high as 1,200 and beyond, there are enough variations to accommodate all budgets. The higher thread counts are usually considered luxury bedding.  Materials include Egyptian and organic cottons, linens, flannel and mixed fibers. Some models are specifically hypoallergenic. Many manufacturers offer a variety of stylish, original prints and intricate patterns, from floral to contemporary. A few distributors even offer hand-painted designs by in-house artists not sold anywhere else.

Comforters, Duvets

Duvets are soft fluffy quilts made with a variety of fill materials, as you know.  Duck or goose down comforters are the more luxurious choice compared with a more inexpensive synthetic alternative. A washable yet decorative cover, similar to a pillowcase, protects the duvet from damage such as stains and pet hair. In contrast, comforters are not sold with a separate protective case but may use duvet covers if desired. However, filler materials for both items are similar. The cost for either product is entirely dependent on the filler, with artificial feathers less expensive than real down. Higher fill ratings indicates higher insulating qualities of the down.

Products feature timeless color patterns or trendy and seasonal designs. Popular character logos are available for childrens’ rooms. Two-tone reversible comforters can be flipped to change colors as the mood dictates. Both comforters and duvets come in standard sizes, with some distributors offering custom-made sizes on demand. When well-maintained, either product can be useful for years after its initial purchase.

Pillow Shams

Pillow shams are an additional way to brighten up a bedroom, through smart use of color and soft fabrics. Shams are often available as part of a coordinating comforter set, but are also sold separately. Entirely decorative, shams are generally not used for sleeping purposes.

Other items to consider, besides comforters, duvets and shams, include window treatments, functional yet aesthetic lamps and appropriate wall art. When all put together, a stylish and comfortable bedroom is a welcome retreat from the day’s stresses.

Sizing
It is important to know that not all mattresses and bed frames are of standard size. For example, many people think that by purchasing a queen quilt cover that it will fit any queen size bed and mattress, but this is not always the case. In fact, queen duvet covers come in more than four different sizes. This is why it is a good idea to get the exact dimensions of the bed by measuring it before you visit the store.  Obviously, if you need a double duvet cover, one would hope that you wouldn’t just try to throw a queen size on and just let it hang more.  This simply doesn’t look right because it doesn’t fit.

Style and Design

Apart from sizing, this is probably the most important thing when choosing a quilt cover. You should ensure that the cover matches your bedroom decor so that your quilt cover doesn’t look out of place in your bedroom. Some people choose to take along color swatches when they go shopping to help them correctly match the colors and designs.

Cotton
Cotton quilt covers are easy to wash and maintain so they are also very durable and last longer. You can make yourself cotton covers if you want to feel warmth and feel green at the same time because cotton fabric is eco-friendly in nature and are also organic so you don’t have to worry about anything synthetic spoiling the green concept of your home.  Cotton shams can look every bit as elegant as more costly covers also.

Silk
Silk quilt covers are also made of natural fiber and thereby retain their shine over a longer period. You can definitely cozy up to a pair of silk covers as they are very smooth and warm. However, silk covers are fairly high on maintenance so you better be ready to follow specific laundry instruction while washing them.

Other Materials
There are also polycotton and flannel quilt covers but they are synthetic in nature and can be quite heavy. So it’s better to opt for something that suits your skin because often quilt covers lead to allergies and you have to be careful while choosing the right kind of fabric.

Once you have measured the mattress and decided on the fabric you can visit the store to purchase your quilt cover. The size of the cover, as touched on above, will be one of the biggest factors affecting price.  As in, that single duvet will cost less than the queen to make.  Be prepared to spend somewhere between $100-$500 for your quilt cover depending on the quality, brand name and material.

If you are fortunate enough to have a sense of style and color coordination, then you can venture out on your own, selecting not only the proper thread count sheets, but the color that will complement your bedroom surroundings. Remember that the higher the thread count more luxurious sheets will feel to your skin while laying in bed. The average consumer will usually opt for the 200 thread count, and this will be for two reasons; one the price is right, and secondly they have never experienced the cool crisp feel of 600 thread count sheets.  While we’re discussing this topic, there is also something called Percale sheets that you may or may not have heard of.  This refers not to a type of cotton but the manner in which the sheets are woven.  Percale refers to a very tight weave, giving rise to a higher thread count sheet.  All of these are offered in king size bedding as well.

If you can afford it at the time of purchase, purchase two complete sets of bedding for the simple reason, that you can have a clean set of king bed sheets while the others are in the laundry. This will allow you to not have to rush and get your laundry done before going to sleep at night. In addition, alternating or rotating the sets will cut down on wear and tear that having a single set will cause. You can also opt, for having, two different sets with different color combinations that will still match your comforter and the rest of your bedroom’s accents. This will preclude the style and character of your room from becoming boring and lackluster.

Percale sheets have a nice crisp feeling that many people prefer. However, they do require more ironing as compared to many other types of sheets, especially if they are made from 100% cotton. The feeling of crisp ironed percale sheets is quite luxurious, and can make your bed feel like it is in a fine hotel. Percale sheets also come in 50/50 poly/cotton blends, which are more resistant to wrinkles. The thread count for percale sheets is generally in the 180 to 200 range.

Everyone loves to stay in bed, it is almost like torture some mornings getting up. This is particularly so if you have to go to work. Each bed is different, but somehow when you are on holiday the hotel sheets always seem to be amazingly soft and fresh.

The feeling of getting in from a day relaxing round the pool. Reading a book or listening to your music, then having a shower and climbing into those fresh sheets is fantastic. Maybe it is just the fact that they are cleaned and ironed daily but they just feel extra specially comfortable.  If you are in high end hotels the fact is that the sheets are probably high thread count Egyptian cotton. This is amongst the highest quality in the world.

When you want to add a little more spice or luxury to your bedroom, you’ll be happy to know that these sheets will help you do that.  If you have a little money to spend and you’re looking to do a little bedroom makeover, then you should definitely keep your bedding in mind.  You’ll want to find out what the color theme of your bedroom is or will be and then you can choose the fancy bedroom bedding. Once you have this done, your bedding should match; this includes the comforter, and sheets. If you do not know what a duvet is, then you should learn. This will give your bedroom space a nice completed and polished – not to mention plush – look.

Buying your sheets for your daybed or any other bed you might have is quite simple online.  Not only can you browse through a number of different patterns, colors and other choices, but you can order and have your sheets shipped quickly to your home.  The only reason that you might need to go to the store itself is if you have unexpected guests or an ‘emergency’ bedding situation where you can’t wait for shipping.  You’ll likely pay less for your bedding products if you shop online as well.

In most cases, we are talking about a twin or full size daybed.  There are larger sizes, but this the standard one.  In fact, many people just try to use their standard bed sheets on these guest beds as well.  In a pinch, this works fine.  But, just like with your clothing, a better fit will mean a better appearance and longer use.  Sheets are not the only thing to consider either.

Your daybed will likely be set up for some period of time between guests, so having it appear nice is important.  You can get a nice duvet and some pillows to make it appear ready to use at any given moment.  It can act like a futon in this way.  In fact, you might consider the daybed a precursor to the modern futon mattress.

Note that in the case of pillows, a sham is different from a pillowcase. Shams are embellishments for your bedding, and they usually have decorative flourishes such as frills around the edges, patterns embroidered into the fabric of the sham, etc. Also, a sham has a zippered slit in the back to insert your pillow into, whereas a pillowcase is simply a cover for your pillow. Pillowcases can sometimes have embellishments, of course, but shams are the bedding items known for them. The difference between a pillowcase and a pillow sham is similar to the different between comforters and duvet covers.

Because cotton is such a friendly fabric cotton shams are really the best for all of your home bedding needs. The biggest advantage to cotton shams is their durability. Cotton is a very versatile fabric with many advantages: cotton can withstand high temperatures that other man-made fabrics can’t; cotton takes dyes very easily; cotton fabric can be subjected to boiling or sterilizing temperatures and survive undamaged; cotton can be ironed at high temperatures; and cotton stands up to abrasion and wear and tear very well.

These advantages make cotton shams of any stripe a good investment for your bedding. Cotton shams are definitely bedding items to love and to take care of, so that your bedroom can maintain it’s value to you long into the future. If you take care of your shams really well, you might even be able to resell them for some small profit later on if you ever feel the need to buy new ones. In short, cotton shams are one of the best choices available.

As we’ve mentioned, there are other ways of creating a tranquil setting in the bedroom,  too.  One of these ways is by using artwork that is tastefully done and represents your favorite places or settings.  When you get ready to rest your head at night, the last thing you want to look at or hear is loud or obnoxious images or sounds.

This is why it is really disturbing to listen to the news late at night.  We all know that it is filled with nothing but trauma and tragedy, you know the whole ‘if it bleeds it leads’ phenomenon.  Watching television is probably the least restful thing you can do just before you close your eyes.  You can watch a movie or some performance, again, something peaceful or soothing to the mind.  If you plan on watching a murder mystery or something that is going to keep your mind active, it might be best to pass on that one and focus on the wall art.

Lighting is another key component to creating a restful and tranquil environment.  Now, this doesn’t mean that your bedroom should always be tranquil.  Again, we’ll keep the G-rating here, but the bedroom is also for passion.  The key is to keep a nice balance.  If your space is overly red and purple or bright colors and fabrics, then you will find it harder to enjoy the tranquil aspect.  Similarly, if your space is all muted tones, with no accent colors and low lighting, then you will find it more restful than playful, if you get the gist.  Lighting is key in this regard.  Softer or indirect lighting will go a long way toward helping your bedroom mood.  You can also get dimmers installed that will allow you to get brighter light during the day or dimmer light for the tranquil or passionate times.

Now, back to that bedding, the all important feature of the bedroom.  You may or may not be familiar with the way that some higher end luxury hotel brands have been selling their own brand of beds and sheets.  In fact, hotel bedding and mattress sales are among some of the ways that these hotels reap greater profits and keep you a loyal customer of their hotels.  They offer you this luxury as a way of pampering you and it works!

By luxury, we would mean something that has a nicer hand or feel to it.  Typically, the gold standard for luxurious bedding is made with Egyptian cotton. What makes this type of cotton so much finer is that the grain of the cotton is longer and is really only grown in a specific region along the Nile.  There are knock-offs, of course, but this is where the true cotton comes from.  If you combine this cotton with a high thread count, now you are talking about a really luxurious feeling on your skin.  The more threads per square inch, the higher the thread count.  This higher thread count is what gives the cotton a softer feel.   It can almost feel satin-like.

Speaking of which, satin and silk sheets also make for a luxurious setting.  They are a bit harder to care for than cotton, so if you plan to use them nightly, then cotton sheets are the way to go.  Flannel sheets are often a luxury in the cooler months as well.  Enjoy your restful sleep on your luxury bedding.
